Streamlining Affordable Housing Applications: Pittsburgh's Innovative AI Program

Pittsburgh is starting a new program to make it quicker and easier for people to apply for affordable housing, using artificial intelligence (AI).

The local Housing Authority is facing a challenge: a lot of people need affordable homes, but there aren't enough staff members to handle all the applications quickly. This is why they're considering AI as a possible solution.

The Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh is about to test how AI could speed up the process for reviewing housing applications. This is especially for residents who need to update their eligibility for housing vouchers—a kind of financial help for low-income families to pay rent.

Normally, people who get these vouchers pay 30% of their income on rent, and the Housing Authority pays the rest.

Last year, there were 5,600 vouchers available, and most of them were used by families in need. However, there are only a few staff members who review each application to make sure everything is correct and up to date.

Even with a few new hires, the team is still too small. Mistakes can happen easily with so much paperwork to go through.

The AI software is expected to help by checking for errors like missing signatures and processing recertifications faster. The Housing Authority has agreed to work with a company called Bob.ai and is paying them around $160,392 to use their AI services for a year to see how it goes.

For those applying for voucher updates, the process will be similar to using a tax service online, where you enter your personal and financial information. The AI will then review your application and documents to help staff decide if you're still eligible for your voucher.

The goal isn’t to replace the current staff but to support them. The AI will take care of some tasks so the staff can spend more time helping residents more effectively.

The program will also try to make things better for everyone involved, including the landlords, by making the application process smoother and faster.

The success of the AI will be measured by how quickly and accurately recertifications can be done, which could lead to expanding this system in the future.
