My Tenant Jumped Off The Balcony

I was able to buy a house because one of the tenants jumped off the balcony from the 2nd floor (probably about 25 ft). He was lucky to be alive. I have it on video if I can post it here. He was on drugs, he wasn’t contemplating jumping…he comes running out of the house thinking he could fly and well, he couldn’t. He narrowly missed a fence by 2 inches otherwise it would have turned out worse. He broke both legs and an arm but was ultimately able to recover.

I had become friends with the previous owner and I helped him out with his lawn and the snow since he lived 45 minutes away and didn’t get around particularly well. So when he found out about the jumper he asked me to buy it from him since he was done with the nonsense from these guys.

So I actually inherited the renters from the seller. The tenants were 3 single, 30-something men – including the jumper. Their favorite pastime was to stay up all night playing instruments – not just tunes – guitars and drums and drove the other tenants absolutely crazy when they were trying to sleep. There was nothing I could do about it tho. I told the other tenants to call the cops, not me because, as a landlord, I couldn’t legally do anything about it. I gave them the option of to tear up the lease if they would simply leave. That made the situation worse. 2 of them stopped paying rent altogether and the music kept going. Then, one of them, hit his girlfriend on the sidewalk at 4am and the camera got it. When I sent the tenant a copy of the video, their tones changed, and they finally left. Even after receiving the video, that same tenant argued that he never hit his girlfriend. Someone else saw it live and actually called the cops.

Of course, they trashed the apartment before leaving.  Well, actually, maybe that's how they lived all the time, but they left a ton of garbage behind.  But the real trash had moved out so I was thankful.
