SunTrust Bank Agrees to Pay $240 Million to Settle Overdraft Fee Lawsuit
What Happened?
SunTrust Bank, which is now called Truist Bank, has agreed to pay $240 million to settle a lawsuit. The lawsuit claimed that the bank charged customers unfair overdraft fees on ATM and debit card purchases.
These fees affected customers in Georgia.
What Was the Problem?
According to the lawsuit, SunTrust Bank charged overdraft fees that broke Georgia's laws about how much interest a lender can charge.
When customers spent more money than they had in their accounts using their debit cards or ATMs, the bank charged fees that were higher than what the law allows.
SunTrust Bank has not admitted that it did anything wrong, but it agreed to pay $240 million to end the lawsuit.
