Trader Joe's Settlement: You Could Get $102 if You Shopped There in 2019

Trader Joe's has agreed to pay $7.4 million to settle a class action lawsuit.

If you paid with a credit or debit card at the grocery store during a specific time period, you might be able to claim some of that money.

What Happened?

The lawsuit claims that Trader Joe's broke a federal law called the Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act (FACTA). This law protects consumers by limiting how much of their card number can appear on receipts.

According to the lawsuit, some Trader Joe's stores printed receipts that showed too much card information. The receipts displayed the first six and last four digits of customers' card numbers.

That's more than half of the 16-digit number on most cards. Under the law, businesses can only print the last five digits.

A customer named Brian Keim filed the lawsuit after shopping at a Trader Joe's in Florida in July 2019. He argued that showing this much card information could put customers at risk of identity theft.

Trader Joe's has not admitted to doing anything wrong. The company says that not all stores printed receipts this way, and only a small number of transactions were affected.

They decided to settle the case to avoid the time and cost of going to court.

Are You Eligible?

You may qualify for a payment if:

  • You shopped at Trader Joe's between March 5, 2019 and July 19, 2019
  • You paid with a credit or debit card
  • Your receipt showed the first six and last four digits of your card number

Some customers may receive an email or postcard letting them know they are eligible.

How Much Could You Get?

The exact amount depends on how many people file claims. However, the estimated payout is about $102.45 per person.

How to File a Claim

You must submit a claim form by June 9, 2026. Here are your options:

  • Online: Visit the official settlement website

If you received a Class ID number, be sure to include it with your claim.

Once you receive your check, you will have 180 days to cash it.
