Tucson's Old Motel Transforms into Affordable Homes

In Tucson, Arizona, something exciting is happening. The city is getting ready to start on a great project called Amazon Flats.

This project will change the old Amazon Motel into 30 homes that people with less money can afford to live in. This effort is part of a bigger plan to help people in Tucson find places to live that they can pay for.

The Mayor of Tucson, Regina Romero, is very happy about this. She said that Amazon Flats will make it possible for more families to have homes that are supportive and permanent, changing their lives for the better. She's thankful for the help from Governor Katie Hobbs and the Arizona Department of Housing.

Speaking of help, the Arizona Department of Housing gave Tucson $6.1 million from the American Recovery Plan Act. This money was used to buy the motel and start fixing it up.

And there's more good news! They're already planning to add more than 50 extra homes in what they're calling Phase 2 of the Amazon Flats project.

This project is a team effort with Old Pueblo Community Services, which will offer long-lasting support to people who used to be homeless.

Ann Chanecka, who leads Tucson's Housing and Community Development Department, said the city has some creative ways to tackle the housing crisis. They're all about making residential areas that are safe, affordable, and nice-looking.

This new development is in line with Tucson's plan to make housing more affordable, especially for those who need it most.
