Pennsylvania has a program designed to help ease housing costs for eligible residents. This program, known as the property or rent tax rebate, offers financial aid of up to $1,000 for qualifying homeowners and renters.

The deadline for applying has even been extended, giving more people the opportunity to benefit.

Who Can Apply?

The program is tailored for:

  • Homeowners and renters aged 65 and older,
  • Widows and widowers aged 50 and older, and
  • People with disabilities who are aged 18 and older.

To qualify, applicants must meet specific income requirements. This rebate aims to reduce the financial strain involved in paying for housing.

Extended Deadline and Application Process

Governor Josh Shapiro’s administration has announced that the application deadline has been extended to December 31, 2025. This extension will allow more seniors and people with disabilities to apply for assistance.

Applications can be submitted by mail, online, or in person until June 30, 2025. The funding for this program comes from Pennsylvania’s lottery and gambling revenues, and state officials emphasize its importance for residents facing economic challenges.

A Significant Impact on Residents

This program has already made a substantial impact. In 2024, over 522,000 rebates worth $319.2 million were distributed. This marked a big increase compared to 2023’s numbers, which saw 405,000 rebates totaling $192 million. Officials attribute the increase to program expansions supported by Governor Shapiro and bipartisan efforts.

For 2025, nearly 400,000 applications have already been submitted—surpassing last year’s record at the same point. Authorities expect an additional 41,000 people to enroll in the program thanks to the extended deadlines and broader eligibility guidelines.
